We’ve all heard horror stories about arranged marriages, but you don’t always hear about the opposite story—like this one! An ex-pat who has lived abroad for the past few years but still has ties to his native India approached us recently.

He wanted to tell us about his niece, who left her life in India to get married in Qatar, and how it had changed her life completely. We were eager to learn more, so we asked him to share more details with us!

Why did she do it?

She did it for love. Her parents had arranged for her to marry a man she didn't know, but she fell in love with another man and ran away with him. She knows her parents will be angry, but she doesn't care.

She's happy and in love, and that's all that matters to her. When she comes back home after school is over, her parents are still waiting for her. They're both so angry that they don't speak to each other for days at a time.

What was her journey like?

She was only 15 years old when she left her home in the Gulf to get married. It was an arranged marriage, and she didn't know her husband-to-be very well. She was scared, but she went through with it. The journey was tough, but she made it. Now, she's married and living a happy life.

When asked about how she feels about leaving her family behind, she said that sometimes it is hard for her. However, now that she has a family of her own, there are many reasons why she is grateful that she moved away from home.

How did she convince her parents?

The schoolgirl, who is from a small village in the Gulf, convinced her parents to let her marry by telling them that she would be able to take care of herself and her new husband. She also promised to continue her education and get good grades. They eventually relented, and she was married off to a man twice her age.

However, once she arrived at his home, it became clear that he had made promises he couldn't keep. In addition to not being able to afford an apartment for his wife, the young husband has yet to find a job because he has no skills or qualifications.
